Things to do in April in North Durham

As we say goodbye to March, which just flew by with March break and the 5 day Easter weekend the kids got thanks to the ice storm.  At the end, we enjoyed a beautiful sunny day on Easter Sunday.

Now it’s time to say Hello to April with a little fun.   April 1Yep! April 1st is  April fools day my friends.  The day  where your playful side can come out.   I love this day!    Be playful, have fun, don’t be mean and remember by noon the joke is over.

Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival (April 2-3)

This festival will mark its 21st year of celebrating the ooey, gooey sweet stuff at participating local farms across Sunderland. No maple syrup festival worth its salt is complete without a buffet of pancakes, and this one is no exception. Visitors can expect to be delighted by hot dogs on the barbecue, live music, bathtub races and a show given by a master illusionist.

Make sure you visit the SUNDERLAND LEGION for their famous ALL DAY PANCAKES.  pancakes Yummy!  Extra syrop for me please.

One of Africa’s most interesting countries, Namibia is mostly desert, with an enormous animal population in the North and the indigenous Himba people in the West. The country features the highest sand dunes in the world and Fish River canyon, the second largest only to the Grand Canyon.      Admission to the presentation is $5/person.
**** Also make sure to visit the Exhibition Namibia: Sands of the Kalahari, on display at the Farndale Gallery in the Port Perry library – January 5 – February 11.
The photos are captivating and give’s an idea of what life and beauty is in Namibia.

5)   Paint nite in Durham

One of my favourite events that will sure be enternaining for both woman and men.

My experience with Paint Night was fabulous, where else do you get a dedicated 2 hours to channel your creative side, have a snack, glass of wine and laugh at yourself with a group of friends. Your finished project will not only surprise you, but your kids will think you are a star.

Don’t Tax My Dream

Don’t tax my dream! It certainly sounds like more of a nightmare than a dream but this really refers to the Province of Ontario allowing Municipalities in Ontario to charge a Land Transfer Tax similar to the one the Province already charges when a property changes hands.

keys

This just doubled the tax when you move! Now the Province just downloaded the “bad guys” mantra to the Municipalities!  They just gave a funding opportunity to the municipalities without the Province having to pay anything and there is no political damage done from the Provinces perspective.

Let’s not forget the study that found for every sale and purchase through the MLS in 2012 resulting in expenditures close to $53,000 in the local economy – buyers buy paint, repair, furniture and appliances – that results in jobs people.  More jobs, more taxes, more revenue…. Not just a tax at the time of a sale and purchase that provides no economic stimulation but rather a decrease in sales and purchases resulting in loss of jobs, taxes and of course, revenue.  Check it out for yourself and see all the facts at www.donttaxmydream.ca

Christmas Time In Port Perry

‘Tis the season in beautiful downtown Port Perry to create some family memories, start a new tradition or carry on a tradition from your childhood. Queen Street turns itself (with the help of many volunteers) into a winter wonderland for both the young and the young at heart. Growing up in Port Perry we never missed the opportunity to watch or take part in the Santa Claus Parade then wait patiently in line to sit for just a few seconds on Santa’s knee.

Port Perry Santa Claus Parade 2013

The top 5 items on our Christmas Bucket List 2015:

1)  Tree Lighting & Candlelight Walk  – Fri. Nov. 20 Watch as Queen Street illuminates for the Christmas/Holiday Season, while enjoying some Hot Chocolate and Christmas carols.

2) Shopping Local! This helps bring revenue back into our community–plus we have some of the most unique stores right on our doorstep. Shop the Black Friday event Nov. 27 where participating stores are open till 8:00. Starting on December 1st, participating stores down town Port Perry are open to 8:00 Wed-Fridays until Christmas.

3. A Family Favourite for Generations- The Port Perry Santa Claus Parade on Dec. 5th. This evening parade is sure to put a smile on the faces of each member of your family.

4. Bakersville Animated Gingerbread Village at the Scugog Memorial Library. This animated village made by community members is a hit for all ages. Make sure to look for the gingerbread house made by Puckrin & Latreille Real Estate Group. We can’t wait to make the house with our girls…I’m sure there will be a tonne of sugar consumed while creating.

5. Nothing screams Christmas more then a visit with Santa. Why wait in line at a busy Shopping Mall, when you can visit your own Town. Visit Santa Claus on Queen Street in Port Perry starting November 26th  at the hut in front of the Post Office on Thursday & Fridays from 3-5, and Saturdays from 10-12 & 1-3.

Take time to celebrate the season with family and friends. Say “Merry Christmas” to a stranger, buy a coffee/tea for the person in line behind you. One Random Act of Kindness can put a smile on the face of a person who just might need it over the holidays.
